Department of Humanities

student readingThe Department of Humanities will touch almost every student as they are the backbone of general education, which is part of every degree before a student starts their area of study. The Humanities, according to the Ohio Humanities Council:

… are the stories, the ideas, and the words that help us make sense of our lives and our world. The humanities introduce us to people we have never met, places we have never visited, and ideas that may have never crossed our minds. By showing how others have lived and thought about life, the humanities help us decide what is important in our own lives and what we can do to make them better. By connecting us with other people, they point the way to answers about what is right or wrong, or what is true to our heritage and our history. The humanities help us address the challenges we face together in our families, our communities, and as a nation.

By taking a course in Humanities, a student can expect to learn how to communicate thoughts through writing papers, learning another language or presenting speeches. Also, a student will learn how to think critically and to consider deeper issues through the subjects of philosophy, history and literature.  The result of studying these subjects is a well-rounded person who employers wish to hire and who employers value.

In addition to the wide variety of courses offered in Humanities, there are four transfer pathways:  Communication, History, Literature and Philosophy and three certificates: American Sign Language (ASL), Media Influencer and Power Skills.
